Keep On Pushin' is part of REDirect. Showcasing twelve of the most renowned skateboarding filmmakers in the world, each filmmaker had 2 months to shoot and edit a short film about skateboarding. The contestants were kitted with all components needed to shoot on RED.

Creepy little GIFs that will make your blood run cold

Milos Rajkovic, better known as Sholim, pushes little GIF art to an extreme new level. These little animated pictures known as Graphics Interchange Format, technically antiquated, are booming on the internet with a huge comeback since 2010. But only few artists used them as disturbing as Sholim from Belgrade, Serbia. His animations makes your blood run cold while you watch these perfectly looped little bastards, sucking you directly into their bizarre and Gilliamesque world. 

Sholim shows us a morbid deconstruction of regular heads and faces and dissects their inner, creepy mechanics. Stuffed with pop culture figures and postmodern symbols it´s like watching a Todd Schorr painting coming alive. A funny little 1920ties horror circus, full of irony and grotesque nightmarish fears. One step ahead, this artists knows how to use simple digital art to generate spontaneous discomfort. We can´t wait for the first gallery that takes the challenge to present his works in an adequate show.

How cosmonauts change while being in space - The Overview Effect

Looking at the earth from space changed the life of any cosmonaut who travelled a spacecraft or the ISS. 
Although the goal of space research was reaching the stars, the cosmonauts experienced the so called Overview Effect, a breathtaking, cognitive shift caused by simply looking back at the earth.

We voted this video as one of the greatest music videos that were done during the last months. Mrs. Greenbird: The return of Mauerblümchensex

Da blieb mir doch heute morgen fast das Frühstücksei im Halse stecken, als das neue Video der Kölner Band Mrs. Greenbird mit dem Titel "Shooting Stars & Fairy Tales" ohne Vorwarnung auf mich einknödelte. Dass es sich hierbei um die Gewinner einer Castingshow handelt, habe ich erst im Anschluss erfahren, denn den Privatsendern habe ich seit den Schockwellen, die Zlatko & Jürgen einst mit ihrem Hit "Großer Bruder" über Deutschland wehen ließen, eher abgeschworen. 
Aber zurück zu den beiden bunten Folk-Vögelchen von Mrs. Greenbird: Da sehen wir zwei naive Vorzeige-Knuddel durch eine bunte Kinderwelt tanzen und diverse Türchen öffnen, wobei sie mit ihren aufgerissenen Augen auch durchaus das Zeug zum Trällern niedlicher Klingelton-Hymnen hätten. Dabei machen "Goldkehlchen und der Mann mit dem Hut", wie sie sich selbst auf ihrer Webseite bezeichnen, keinen Hehl daraus, dass ihnen anscheinend nichts besseres einfällt, als sich dämlich grinsend wie zwei tapsige Bärchen durchs Bild zu bewegen, sobald eine Kamera auf sie gerichtet wird. Vor allem "der Mann mit dem Hut" schafft dies über eine erstaunliche Länge von 3:40 Minuten, weshalb man ihm eigentlich doch schon wieder einen ersten Platz auf einem Privatsender zugestehen muss. Irgendwie scheint er es gar nicht fassen zu können, in diesem Musikvideo gerade selbst die Hauptrolle zu spielen. Trotzdem meistert er diesen Tanz unter dem Damoklesschwert mit einer Mischung aus Dilettantismus und einer gesunden Verschiebung der eigenen Schamgrenze. Ob jemand von uns in diesen Pseudo-Hippie Klamotten ein besseres Bild vor der Linse abgeben würde wäre natürlich fraglich, denn dass Mrs. Greenbird die aussortierte Garderobe von Paddy Kelly aufträgt, wertet dieses Feuerwerk kleinbürgerlicher Trivialität leider nicht auf. Dazu rollt Goldkehlchen brav mit den Klimperaugen. Ok, es ist Weihnachten, da lasse ich Mauerblümchensex und Lagerfeuerromantik gerne gelten. Und im Januar seid ihr dann ja Gott sei Dank auch wieder aus dem Fernsehen verschwunden.

Dumb Ways To Die - a viral superhit by the Melbourne Metro Trains

Dumb Ways To Die is the name of a campaign that was started by the Metro Trains Melbourne in November 2012 in Australia. The safety campaign was run to prevent people from premature death through hits by train caused of a too close stay to platform edges as well as simply doing stupid stuff close to railway systems. 

Like every modern campaign, the whole thing was planned to go viral on the internet. To make it a viral superhit, the creators covered the message with a content that people barely can resist to share - a cute and brilliant cartoon video combined with a wonderful song sung by the indie / folk artist Emily Lubitz & Ollie McGill. It worked out better than anyone could expect. The catchy video was watched more than 25 million times during the first 10 days and the song ranked 6th in the worldwide Itunes charts. Finally, it kicked Rihanna with her video for "Diamonds" from position 1 of the Viral Video Charts. That´s viral marketing at it´s best, a rare concept where all elements fit perfectly together. Congratulations to the creators of this amazing campaign.

Massive Anti ACTA demonstrations worldwide with huge success

SOPA and PIPA are stopped in the US - for now. But ACTA is coming up worldwide and it will be even worse. That`s why Last Saturday, Feb. 11th 2012, hundred of thousands demonstrated against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) all over the world. People across four continents claimed to reconsider the agreement which would definitely change the internet and the privacy of their users as we know them till now. ACTA is censorship and gives foreign governments and copyright owners incredibly broad powers.

The first Occupy-Movement in my hometown Dortmund, Germany, had 30 people running in the streets. The ACTA protest leaders from last saturday expected 300 people for their demonstrations. But finally 2500 citizens (official number) showed up in the end and topped all expectations. So far, the protests have forced the european prime ministers of Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Latvia to reconsider the agreement, but they have not yet dismissed it. It has to be killed, worldwide. So thanks to every single one out there for protesting against lobbyism that would aggravate poverty in third world countries and walking peacefully to protect our privacy. SOPA/PIPA: American Law, World Problem

The big news in the world today are the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) which both are being developed in regards to online piracy and copyright infringement. Sounds simple? Well, right now they are two most controversial bills, much like the NDAA ,that also infringe on personal privacy and freedom, brought to you by, the US Senate floor. Thought be shelved and vetoed, they are back on the table for restructure and a possible vote later this year, read more here. Supported, as usual, by a combination of democratic and republican lobbyist, movie and music entertainment moguls, and some of the largest internet corporation such as GoDaddy.com, if these bills go through not only is the entire internet risking possible damage to it very core foundation, freedom of speech, but will also it undermine years innovation and integrity.

How will these bills work if implemented? That will be the catch. You see, it is all based on what is "deemed" as copyright infringement. Take the current Wikileaks for example, what if the US Government, or any government for that matter, decided to copyright sensitive, high-security information. The result would be, that under these bills, the US could have all links pointing to Wikileaks terminated, thus terminating the websites accessibility and rendering it useless. The scary thing is that this can be used in platforms such as Google, YouTube, Facebook, Reddit, Flickr, Twitter, etc—all platforms that were highly utilized by the Occupy Wall Street and Arab Spring movements. SOPA would not only institute the same practices as regimes such as China and Iran that outlaw the tools used by activists and thus circumventing censorship—Even scarier, take this out of the US/European agenda and put these types of bills in the hands of other countries. This possibility of a governments ability to squash dissent is appalling and completely unconstitutional in US politics as it goes against the First Amendment of the United States that says,

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Thinks about the type of message this sends to the world. On TIME's Techland blog, Jerry Brito wrote,

"Imagine if the U.K. created a blacklist of American newspapers that its courts found violated celebrities' privacy? Or what if France blocked American sites it believed contained hate speech?" Similarly, the Center for Democracy and Technology warned, If SOPA and PIPA are enacted, the US government must be prepared for other governments to follow suit, in service to whatever social policies they believe are important—whether restricting hate speech, insults to public officials, or political dissent."

The only way a website will be able to declare immunity from this will be to voluntarily police their own sites and censor. All of this means that it will be harder to share information online. Bottomline!

Today, the Wikipedia community announced its decision to black out the English-language Wikipedia for 24 hours, worldwide, beginning at 05:00 UTC on Wednesday, January 18 (you can read the statement from the Wikimedia Foundation here). The blackout is a protest against proposed legislation in the United States — the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate — that, if passed, would seriously damage the free and open Internet, including Wikipedia.

Am Mittwoch, dem 18. Januar ist es soweit. Eine noch nie dagewesene Protestaktion startet um 6 Uhr CET und endet 12 bis 24 Stunden später. Verschiedenste Internet - und Social Media Dienste beteiligen sich an der Aktion "Blackout", um auf die geplanten Gesetzentwürfe SOPA und PIPA der US Regierung aufmerksam zu machen. Es geht dabei um den Kampf für die Netzfreiheit in den Vereinigten Staaten. Für nähere Infos empfehle ich unseren Post "Stop SOPA - Im Kampf für die Netzfreiheit" vom 12. Jan. 2012. Bei der Aktion wird es am Mittwoch auch zu einer Abschaltung der englischsprachigen Wikipediaseite kommen.
Wikipedia Gründer Jimmy Wales twitterte: "Ich beginne gerade Presseanfragen über den kommenden Blackout zu beantworten. Das wird ein Knaller. Ich hoffe Wikipedia wird die Telefonleitungen am Mittwoch in Washington glühen lassen. Erzählt es jedem den ihr kennt! Freiheit wird niemals freiwillig von den Unterdrückern gebilligt, es muss immer von den Unterdrückten eingefordert werden. Am Mittwoch fordert Wikipedia ein." -C.

Stop SOPA - Der Kampf für die Netzfreiheit

Ein Aufschrei hallt durch die internationale Netzgemeinde. Sergey Brin und Larry Page, beide Gründer von Google, Wikipedia Gründer Jimmy Wales, aber auch Konzerne wie YouTube, Ebay und Facebook sehen einem radikalen Eingriff in die Internetfreiheit am Horizont und wenden sich mit offenen Briefen an ihre digitale Anhängerschaft sowie an den Kongress der Vereinigten Staaten. Was passiert da eigentlich?

Der "Stop Online Piracy Act", kurz SOPA, sowie der "Protect IP Act" PIPA sind lobbyistisch geforderte Gesetzentwürfe, die dem Kongress vorliegen. Die Lobbyisten, dass sind in diesem Falle keine bösen Ölmultis oder Militärs, es sind die sonst so harmlosen Entertainmentindustrien, bestehend aus Film und Musikbranchen. Sie fordern in dem vorgelegten Gesetzentwurf eine staatliche Kontrolle über Netzinhalte in den USA. Sollte dieser Entwurf durchgesetzt werden, dürfen einzelne Kongressabgeordnete richterliche Prüfungen und Verordnungen gegen Netzfirmen und Provider verhängen. Die jetzt diskutierten Gesetze greifen somit tief in die Infrastruktur und Nutzungsrechte des Internet ein. So sollen Filterlisten angelegt werden, wie sie in Deutschland als Maßnahme gegen Kinderpornografie vorgesehen waren und schließlich abgelehnt wurden - und das nicht, um potenzielle Opfer vor Verbrechern zu schützen wie es in Deutschland der Fall war, sondern um die Interessen der Musik- und Filmwirtschaft durchzusetzen. Provider fürchten, das in den USA unter Umständen sogar einzelne Datenpakete auf vermeintliche Raubkopie-Material durchleuchtet werden müssen. Eine derartige "Deep Packet Inspection" wird ansonsten nur von repressiven Regimen, etwa im Iran, eingesetzt, um Internet-Inhalte zu zensieren und Andersdenkende zu verfolgen. Sollten freie Technologiefirmen gezwungen werden, als verlängerter Arm von Regierungsinstitutionen zu dienen, werden die Grundrechte von Anbietern sowie deren Kunden auf Informations- und Meinungsfreiheit massiv behindert.
Das Internet ist und muss unbedingt ein absoluter Freiraum für die Masse bleiben, es gehört uns allen. Jegliche Reglementierung von Seiten des Staates muss unterbunden werden, bei uns genauso wie überall sonst auf der Welt. Wenn Facebook, YouTube & Co per Gesetz gezwungen werden können, einzelne User zu sperren oder diverse Services in bestimmten Ländern abzuschalten, ist die Revolution des Web 2.0 gestorben. Natürlich sind die Probleme der Musik - und Filmindustrie ernstzunehmen. Die Diskussionen darum erreichen mittlerweile ihr zehntes Lebensjahr. Doch dieser Weg ist mit Sicherheit der Falsche. Statt Bürger bestimmter Staaten per Gesetz zu begrenzen, sollten die Energien lieber in neue Techniken und Vermarktungen der Branche investiert werden. Pioniere wie Steve Jobs haben der Entertainmentbranche mehr als nur die Hand gereicht, im Gegenteil, die freien Nutzer waren in letzter Konsequenz sogar die erlösenden Retter, indem sie massenhaft Musik und Filme über die Wege konsumierten, die Jobs für sie baute. Dieser Gemeinde von Konsumenten nun von hinten das Messer in den Rücken zu stechen klingt nach reaktionärer Trotzhaftigkeit.
Laut Internetberichten steht eine erste Protestwelle der Anbieter an: Um auf die Situation aufmerksam zu machen, wollen einige von ihnen einen angekündigten Black Out simulieren, heisst, den Service für eine angegebene Zeit einstellen. Am 18. Januar startet der Social Media Aggregator REDDIT mit einem 12stündigen Black Out auf seiner Hauptseite. Unterstützung bekommen sie von diversen Anonymous Diensten, die sich solidarisch "still" schalten werden.  -C.

Dank MySpace und Konsorten einmal um die halbe Welt

Es ist unglaublich. Es ist Weihnachten, in Deutschland bricht das Schneechaos aus und ich sitze in diesem Augenblick barfuß unter Palmen und schlürfe meinen ersten Kaffee des Tages. Und wieder einmal verdanke ich es den Social Networking Plattformen, das ich tief in den amerikanischen Alltag einbrechen darf.

Stig Sneddon, Lebenskünstler aus einer 600 Seelen Gemeinde in Nebraska, hat uns nach Florida eingeladen, wo wir zusammen im Haus seiner Freundin wohnen. Stig fiel mir vor zwei Jahren auf MySpace auf, seine Songs interessierten und seine YouTube Videos faszinierten mich. Ich fragte Stig, ob ich nicht einen Song von ihm remixen könnte, tat dies und lud ihn darauf hin ein, einen Vocal Part auf unserer Stuntcat Platte zu übernehmen.
Per Filesharing fügte ich seine Takes in den Song "Charles David Nutlicker III"ein und wir hatten dabei in gefühlten tausend Mails eine Menge Spaß. Hier reifte auch die Idee, sich irgendwann einmal zu treffen. Genauso wie zuvor mit dem New Yorker Künstler NNMaddox, mit dem ich ein ganzes Album aufnahm, bevor wir uns kennenlernen durften, oder Micah Carlson und Shon Lawhon aus Los Angeles, die meine damalige Band zu einer dreiwöchigen US Tour einluden, bis wir uns schließlich am LAX zum ersten Mal in die Arme fielen, haben auch hier wieder einmal die Social Networking Plattformen einen simplen Gedanken zur Relalität reifen lassen.
Natürlich stehen immer außergewöhnliche Menschen dahinter, die aus einere bloßen Idee ein unvergessliches Erlebnis machen. Aber den Zugriff auf solche Plattformen jederzeit zu besitzen, das ist ein kostbares Gut unserer Zeit. Es geht um nicht weniger als die völlige Auflösung aller politischen und geografischen Grenzen, und eben nicht nur um bloßen Exhibitionismus und stumpfsinnige Selbstdarstellung, wie so oft behauptet wird.
Zum Glück stecken eben doch Menschen hinter den Millionen Profilbildern, Personen, die keineswegs "fake"sind und selbstverliebt ihre Außenwelt beeindrucken wollen, wie man es so einfach und gerne nachsagt. Ein echter Mensch läßt sich eben nicht in 6 Bildern ein 3 Sätzen zusammenfassen, dazu ist dieses Leben viel zu kompliziert. Einfach mal beim virtuellen Nachbarn anklopfen und Hallo sagen. Wie im echten Leben auch. Und plötzlich sitzt man Weihnachten auf der anderen Seite der Erde unter Palmen, mit den Füßen im Sand und dem Netbook auf den Knien. Bereit, das nächste Profil zu durchstöbern.
